Acetylcysteine: how to take it safely

What it is for
Thins and loosens thick mucus in chesty coughs. A higher dose is used in paracetamol overdose.
How to take it
- Dissolve the powder or tablet in water and drink it straight away.
- Drink plenty of fluids.
When to take it
Take it once to 3 times a day, as the label says.
Take it with
With or without food.
What to avoid
- Tell your doctor if you have asthma or stomach ulcers.
- Taking it together with cough suppressants.
Possible side effects
Nausea, stomach upset, a smell like rotten eggs.
Get help if
Wheezing, rash, swelling of the face or trouble breathing: get urgent help.
